Findings suggest that while "Yes, ma'am" is perceived by older generations as a sign of respect, younger and non-binary workers increasingly experience it as a tool of affective labor that reinforces racialized and gendered hierarchies. The paper concludes by proposing a pragmatic shift toward non-deferential alternatives (e.g., "Got it," "Absolutely") as a form of linguistic decolonization.
