“We tried,” Choi said. His face was pale, his lips blue. “The gate is drawing power from somewhere else. Somewhere outside the ship. Outside the galaxy.” The librarian’s voice dropped to a whisper
He was humanoid but not human—taller, thinner, with skin the color of weathered bronze and eyes that held no pupils, only a faint swirl of gold. He wore robes of a fabric that seemed to shift between solid and liquid. He did not stand when she entered. He simply looked at her, and she felt, for the first time in decades, the prickling weight of being truly seen. He was hungry
And the young one had tasted that knowledge. And it had made him hungry for the only thing that could fill the void left by a forgotten story.
“Shut it down,” she shouted. “Cut all power to the gate.”
