This paper investigates two central questions: (1) Why did OkJatt become a primary source for Punjabi movie consumption? (2) What are the measurable and qualitative impacts of OkJatt on Pollywood’s production ecosystem? By synthesizing industry reports, legal documents, and audience behavior studies, this paper provides a comprehensive analysis of OkJatt as both a symptom and a cause of structural weaknesses in regional media distribution. Between 2015 and 2020, Punjabi cinema saw a 300% increase in production output, with films like Carry on Jatta 2 and Chal Mera Putt grossing over ₹50 crore worldwide (Punjab Film Chamber, 2022). The diaspora—particularly in Canada, the UK, and Australia—became a key market. However, legitimate digital access remained fragmented. While platforms like Amazon Prime and Chaupal later expanded their Punjabi catalogs, many films initially had delayed international releases or required expensive cable subscriptions (Dhillon, 2020). OkJatt, Punjabi movies, Pollywood, digital piracy, copyright infringement, film industry economics, regional cinema. 1. Introduction The Punjabi film industry, colloquially known as Pollywood, has experienced exponential growth since the early 2010s, producing high-budget films with international appeal. However, this growth has been paralleled by the rise of unauthorized digital distribution platforms. Among them, “OkJatt” emerged as one of the most visited pirate websites for Punjabi, Hindi, and dubbed Hollywood movies (Kaur & Singh, 2021). Despite repeated legal actions and domain seizures, OkJatt has persisted by migrating to new domain extensions, reflecting a cat-and-mouse dynamic between law enforcement and cyber-pirates.
