Depending on who you ask, Gray is either a rising interdisciplinary artist, a fictional protagonist from an unpublished manuscript that gained a cult following on social media, or a conceptual project about identity in the digital age. Perhaps, fittingly, the ambiguity is the point. The first known appearance of the name occurred in a now-deleted Substack newsletter in late 2022, titled “Notes from a Rental Apartment with Bad Light.” The author, writing under the pseudonym H.B. Gray, described a life of deliberate uncertainty: moving between Bushwick and Crown Heights, collecting discarded film cameras, and working overnight shifts at a 24-hour laundromat.
