His name is Jack Dawson. He won his ticket in a poker game. He’s a vagabond artist from Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin who lives for freedom, sketching Parisian alleyways and California piers. He talks Rose down by promising to join her in the water — “I’m an excellent swimmer.” She slips; he pulls her to safety. Cal arrives, dismisses Jack as a peasant, but Rose insists on thanking him properly. Cal invites Jack to dinner the next night.

Later, Jack smuggles Rose to a real party — a third-class Irish dance in the steerage hold. Stomping, singing, drinking cheap beer — she kicks off her heels and dances until her corset feels like a lie. Cal has his manservant, Lovejoy, tail them. When Rose returns to her suite, Cal slaps her. He places the Heart of the Ocean — a 56-carat blue diamond — around her neck. “You will never be poor again.”
