The story unfolded through echo-location. You’d strike the bell on purpose, and the reverberations would reveal ghostly memories: a mother lowering her infant into a diving bell to save it, an abbot carving the plague formula into a stone tablet and then shattering it, a young Vesper refusing to leave her post as the water rose. carthornero games

Based out of a repurposed maritime library in Valparaíso, Chile, Carthornero was founded by three childhood friends—Sofia Iberra (design), Mateo Cruz (art), and Lucia Fuentes (writing). They named their studio after a misspelling of Carta de Marino (Sailor’s Map) and an inside joke about a thorny rose bush outside their window. Their debut game was a commercial disaster and a cult masterpiece. The Half-Light Hotel was a first-person “un-mystery” set in a single, impossibly sprawling art-deco hotel that existed in a permanent, golden sunset. You played a room-service waiter named Alder who had no memory of checking in. There was no combat. No inventory puzzles. The only mechanic was “attention”—you could focus on any object, person, or patch of light for as long as you wanted.
The industry begged for a sequel. “What happened to Vesper?” “ Is the plague on the surface?” “ Multiplayer co-op bell-ringing?”
The game had one mechanic: . Vesper carried a length of rusted chain attached to a submerged bell. You could release the chain to float faster, but you’d lose your sense of depth. You could pull the chain to ascend, but each pull struck the bell, sending a mournful bong that attracted glowing, harmless deep-fish—and also slowly cracked your sanity meter, replacing your HUD with fragments of drowned prayer.
