When Kitano visits them, he doesn’t yell or vow revenge. He simply says, “I’m glad you’re alive. Please rest.” And because his face twists this kindness into a demonic snarl, the thugs interpret it as a death threat to their enemy. The dramatic irony is exquisite. The volume’s centerpiece is a rain-soaked rooftop fight. Ikuno has cornered Hirata, demanding he admit Kitano is a coward. Hirata — trembling, sweating, and fully aware that Kitano could kill him by accident — does something unexpected. He lies.

In a masterful sequence, Ikuno beats down several of Kitano’s “subordinates” (who, remember, are themselves violent delinquents). The hospital scenes are where author Yoshiaki Sadamoto (no relation to the Evangelion designer; this is a common name mix-up — the author is actually ) shows his range. We see the thugs, bruised and bloody, refusing to name their attacker. Not out of honor, but out of shame — and a strange, unspoken loyalty to Kitano. When Kitano finally arrives, he sees Ikuno holding Hirata by the collar. Kitano’s inner monologue reads: “My friend is in pain. I don’t understand why, but my chest feels hot.” The dramatic irony is exquisite
